The Smile is an English rock band formed by Radiohead members Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner. Emerging from the shadows during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the band was conceived as a platform for Yorke and Greenwood to explore new musical terrains, infused with the dynamic rhythms and jazz influences brought by Skinner. Their debut surprised the music world when they performed at the Glastonbury Festival’s Live at Worthy Farm event in May 2021. This unexpected appearance marked the beginning of a journey that would see The Smile quickly distinguish itself from the colossal presence of Radiohead, even as it bore the unmistakable imprint of its creators.
The Smile’s first record, A Light for Attracting Attention, was released in May 2022 to widespread acclaim. The album, produced by longtime Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich, showcased a blend of genres that extended beyond Radiohead’s signature sound. Critics noted the incorporation of jazz, krautrock, and progressive rock influences, describing the band’s sound as looser and more experimental. The album was preceded by six singles, including “You Will Never Work in Television Again” and “The Smoke,” which introduced listeners to the band’s distinct style—one that combined intricate riffs, complex rhythms, and a wilder, more spontaneous energy compared to Radiohead’s meticulously crafted soundscapes.
Following the release of their debut album, The Smile embarked on an extensive tour across Europe and North America in 2022 and 2023, further solidifying their place in the rock music landscape. They released two live EPs during this period: The Smile (Live at Montreux Jazz Festival, July 2022) and Europe: Live Recordings 2022. These recordings captured the raw energy of their live performances, offering fans a glimpse into the band’s evolving sound.
In January 2024, The Smile released their second album, Wall of Eyes, produced by Sam Petts-Davies, who had previously worked with Yorke on the soundtrack for the film Suspiria. This album continued to explore the themes and sounds that had defined their debut but with a more refined approach. The singles “Bending Hectic,” “Wall of Eyes,” and “Friend of a Friend” were met with universal acclaim, with critics praising the band’s ability to push the boundaries of their sound while retaining the emotional depth and complexity that have always characterized Yorke and Greenwood’s work.
Wall of Eyes was accompanied by a series of unique screenings in independent cinemas worldwide. Titled “Wall of Eyes, on Film,” these events featured surround sound listening parties, exclusive footage from the album’s recording sessions, and the premiere of Paul Thomas Anderson’s video for “Friend of a Friend.” The screenings underscored the band’s commitment to creating immersive, multifaceted artistic experiences, much like those that have defined Radiohead’s legacy.
The Smile’s third album, Cutouts, recorded during the same sessions as Wall of Eyes, is set for release in October 2024. As The Smile continues to evolve, their work is consistently marked by a willingness to experiment and a drive to explore new sonic landscapes. Their ability to maintain the intensity and innovation of Radiohead while forging their own identity as The Smile has secured their place as one of the most exciting acts in contemporary rock music.
