Their distinctive sound is characterized by vintage electronic keyboards, multilingual vocals, and an experimental approach that set them apart from their contemporaries. Their 1992 debut album Peng! introduced the world to their innovative blend of 1950s jazz and 1970s krautrock influences. The album set the stage for their later works, and in 1993, Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements further refined their style, incorporating mechanical sounds and electronic effects. Songs like “Jenny Ondioline” became iconic examples of their groundbreaking sound.
In 1996, Emperor Tomato Ketchup was released, drawing inspiration from Shuji Terayama’s experimental film Tomato Kecchappu Kôtei. The album combined eclectic musical styles with politically charged and socially conscious lyrics, securing Stereolab’s place in the alternative music scene.
After a hiatus beginning in 2009, Stereolab reunited in 2019, delighting fans with tours and reissues of their beloved albums. In April 2025, they announced the release of their first new album in 15 years, Instant Holograms on Metal Film, along with the single “Aerial Troubles,” signaling a return to their innovative roots.
