About Sloane
Carol Sloane (1937–2023) was a celebrated American jazz singer, renowned for her extraordinary pitch, subtle phrasing, and emotionally charged performances. Born Carol Morvan in Providence, Rhode Island, she started her professional career at just 14 years old. By 1961, she had already made a mark on the jazz scene, performing at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival and recording for Columbia Records, which helped propel her into the spotlight.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Sloane worked with respected orchestras such as those led by Les and Larry Elgart, and collaborated with the vocal group Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. After a brief hiatus in the 1970s, she made a strong return to the music scene in the 1980s, signing with Concord Jazz. Her 1988 album Love You Madly is considered a career high point, earning her international acclaim, especially in Japan.
Sloane’s voice was often compared to jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, known for its clarity and the emotional depth she brought to each performance. She continued to perform and record well into her later years, with her final album, Live at Birdland, released in 2022. A documentary, SLOANE: A Jazz Singer, is currently being produced to capture the essence of her remarkable journey through music.
