About Skillet
Skillet is an American Christian rock band that originated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1996. The group was founded by John Cooper, who had been the vocalist for the progressive rock band Seraph, and Ken Steorts, former guitarist for Urgent Cry. Encouraged by their pastor to start a new musical project, they formed Skillet as a side endeavor, with the name symbolizing the blend of different styles and influences they brought together. They were soon joined by Trey McClurkin on drums, and within just a month of their formation, the band attracted attention from ForeFront Records, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album later that year.
Skillet’s early music was characterized by a grunge-influenced sound, but their style evolved over time. Their second album, Hey You, I Love Your Soul (1998), marked a shift towards a lighter, more industrial alternative rock. This was followed by Invincible (2000), which introduced an electronic rock sound, largely due to the permanent addition of John Cooper’s wife, Korey Cooper, on keyboards. The band’s lineup saw several changes during these years, with original members leaving and new ones, like guitarist Kevin Haaland and drummer Lori Peters, joining the fold.
The band’s breakthrough came with their 2003 album Collide, which introduced a heavier, more guitar-driven sound. The album’s success led to a re-release by Lava Records in 2004 and a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Gospel Album. The follow-up album, Comatose (2006), solidified Skillet’s status in the rock scene with hits like “Rebirthing,” “Whispers in the Dark,” and “Comatose.” The album debuted at No. 55 on the Billboard 200 and earned the band a strong following.
Skillet’s relentless touring schedule played a significant role in their rise, earning them a reputation as one of the hardest-working bands. However, lineup changes continued, with Lori Peters retiring in 2008 and being replaced by Jen Ledger, whose drumming and co-lead vocals added a new dynamic to the band. The release of Awake in 2009 marked another milestone, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and producing the hit singles “Monster” and “Hero,” both of which became anthems in the rock and Christian music scenes.
The band’s success continued with the albums Rise (2013), Unleashed (2016), and Victorious (2019), all of which debuted in the top ten of the Billboard 200. Their music, known for its energetic, anthemic quality and themes of perseverance and faith, has resonated with a broad audience, leading to multiple platinum and gold certifications. Skillet’s influence extends beyond the Christian rock genre, as they have become one of the most prominent crossover bands in contemporary rock music.
Throughout their career, Skillet has remained committed to evolving their sound while staying true to their message. Their ability to blend different musical styles—ranging from symphonic rock to electronic elements—has kept their music fresh and relevant. Today, with over two decades of success, Skillet continues to inspire and energize fans around the world with their powerful performances and unwavering faith.
