About Saraya
Saraya was an American hard rock band formed in New Jersey in 1987. The band was founded by vocalist Sandi Saraya and keyboardist Gregg Munier, who initially performed under the name Alsace Lorraine. After a brief stint in Los Angeles in search of fame, the duo returned to New Jersey, where they began writing material for what would become their debut album. The band was eventually rounded out by guitarist Tony “Bruno” Rey, bassist Gary Taylor, and drummer Chuck Bonfante, creating the lineup that would record their first album.
In 1989, Saraya released their self-titled debut album on PolyGram Records. The album featured a polished, melodic rock sound and showcased Sandi Saraya’s powerful vocals. The band gained attention with their single “Love Has Taken Its Toll,” which spent 39 weeks on the Billboard 200, peaking at number 79. This track, along with their follow-up single “Back to the Bullet,” helped establish the band in the late 1980s rock scene, earning them a modest following. Their music videos also gained traction on MTV, further enhancing their visibility.
Despite their early success, Saraya faced internal challenges. The band’s lineup underwent changes following their debut album. Bassist Gary Taylor was replaced by Barry Dunaway, who had previously played with Yngwie Malmsteen. Keyboardist Gregg Munier also left the band, feeling dissatisfied with the band’s musical direction, which had shifted to a more guitar-driven sound. His departure marked a significant shift in the band’s dynamic, as he had been a key contributor to their early material.
Saraya’s second album, When the Blackbird Sings, was released in 1991. The album saw the band embracing a heavier, more guitar-centric style, but it did not achieve the same level of success as their debut. The album was recorded with minimal keyboard contributions, and guitarist John Roggio joined the band for the subsequent tour. Despite the changes, Saraya continued to deliver strong performances, but the commercial performance of their second album did not meet expectations, leading to growing tensions within the band.
By 1992, Saraya had disbanded after only two albums. Rumors of a third album circulated, but it was never released, and the band members went their separate ways. Sandi Saraya, the band’s charismatic frontwoman, briefly married Tesla bassist Brian Wheat before marrying actor Carter Kelly and settling in Princeton, New Jersey. Tony “Bruno” Rey continued his career in music, working with artists like Joan Jett, Enrique Iglesias, and Rihanna, among others.
Tragically, Gregg Munier passed away in 2006 from complications related to pneumonia. He was remembered for his contributions to Saraya’s early success and his distinctive keyboard work. Despite the band’s brief tenure in the music industry, Saraya left a lasting impression with their blend of hard rock and powerful vocals. Their music continues to be remembered by fans of late 1980s and early 1990s rock.
