About Sahiban

Mirza Sahiban is a timeless Punjabi folktale that has resonated with audiences for centuries. Originating from the Punjab region, it tells the tragic story of Mirza and Sahiban, two cousins whose love defied social conventions and family expectations.

Mirza, the son of Wanjhal Khan, a respected leader of the Kharal tribe in Danabad (now part of Faisalabad, Pakistan), was known for his courage and remarkable archery skills. Sahiban, daughter of Mahni Khan, the chief of Khewa in the Jhang district, was admired for her beauty and intellect. Their love blossomed during their youth, but societal pressures and familial obstacles kept them apart.

In defiance of these constraints, Mirza and Sahiban decided to run away together. However, tragedy struck during their escape. To prevent Mirza from fighting her brothers, Sahiban, in a moment of despair, broke his arrows. This decision led to Mirza’s tragic death at the hands of her brothers. Stricken by grief and guilt, Sahiban took her own life, sealing their fate in a heartbreaking story of love, sacrifice, and sorrow.

The story of Mirza and Sahiban is part of the quartet of the most famous tragic romances of Punjab, alongside Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal, and Sassi Punnun. It has been adapted into various forms of media, from films to literature, and continues to be a significant part of Punjabi cultural heritage.
