About Powerwolf
Powerwolf is a German power metal band that was founded in 2003 in Saarbrücken. The group was formed by former members of the stoner rock band Red Aim and comprises vocalist Karsten Brill, known as “Attila Dorn,” lead guitarist Benjamin Buss as “Matthew Greywolf,” bassist/rhythm guitarist David Vogt as “Charles Greywolf,” keyboardist Christian Jost as “Falk Maria Schlegel,” and drummer Roel van Helden. The band’s distinctive style incorporates dark themes and imagery, drawing on elements of the Roman Catholic church, werewolves, and vampires. Their theatrical stage presence is enhanced by elaborate costumes and corpse paint, which contribute to their unique aesthetic.
Powerwolf released their debut album, Return in Bloodred, in 2005, marking the beginning of their rise in the power metal scene. Their sophomore effort, Lupus Dei (2007), continued to build their reputation with a concept album centered around a wolf’s journey from bloodlust to enlightenment. The band’s third album, Bible of the Beast (2009), was their first to enter the German charts, reflecting growing success. Following this release, the band experienced a lineup change when their original drummer, Stefan Gemballa (stage name Stéfane Funèbre), left and was replaced by Tom Diener, who was subsequently succeeded by Roel van Helden in 2011. That year, they released their fourth album, Blood of the Saints, further solidifying their place in the power metal genre.
In 2012, Powerwolf signed with Napalm Records, leading to the release of their next album, Preachers of the Night, in 2013. This album debuted at number one on the German charts, marking a significant achievement for the band. Their subsequent album, Blessed & Possessed (2015), was certified gold in the Czech Republic, demonstrating their expanding appeal. Powerwolf’s seventh album, The Sacrament of Sin (2018), continued their commercial success and received positive reviews, earning the German Metal Hammer “Best Album of the Year” award. The album featured a limited edition that included a second disc of Powerwolf songs covered by other artists, further showcasing the band’s influence.
Their eighth studio album, Call of the Wild, was released in July 2021, continuing their tradition of blending epic metal with dark, gothic themes. Powerwolf’s latest release, Interludium (2023), continued their evolution, and the band announced their tenth studio album, Wake Up the Wicked, set for release in July 2024.
Powerwolf’s live performances are renowned for their audience engagement and pyrotechnics, with the band referring to their concerts as “heavy metal masses.” Attila Dorn frequently interacts with the audience, creating an immersive experience that complements the band’s dramatic stage setup. Despite their use of religious and supernatural themes, Powerwolf does not explicitly promote a particular ideology, instead focusing on creating a powerful and entertaining metal experience. Their music, characterized by a blend of classic metal instrumentation, organ sounds, and occasionally Latin and German lyrics, reflects their influences from bands like Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden while establishing their own distinctive sound in the power metal genre.
