About Omega

Omega is one of Hungary’s most legendary rock bands, formed in Budapest in 1962. They began by covering Western rock hits, but their artistic identity took shape in 1967 with the arrival of keyboardist Gábor Presser, sparking a shift toward original songwriting. Their breakout hit, “Gyöngyhajú lány” (The Girl with Pearly Hair), released in 1969, became a cultural milestone—not just in Hungary, but across Europe. The song later gained new life when it was famously covered by the Scorpions and sampled by Kanye West in “New Slaves.”

After Presser’s departure in 1971 to form Locomotiv GT, Omega evolved toward a heavier, more cosmic sound—embracing progressive and space rock influences. Albums like Time Robber (1977) and Gammapolis (1979) demonstrated their mastery of soaring synths, driving rhythms, and poetic lyrics, often navigating themes of freedom and transcendence in a politically restricted era.

Even under the limitations of Hungary’s communist regime, Omega thrived. They cleverly sidestepped censorship by releasing albums in both Hungarian and English, building a loyal fanbase throughout Eastern Europe and even in parts of the West.

Following a hiatus, they reunited in 1994, releasing Trans and Dance (1995) and playing sold-out shows, including collaborations with members of the Scorpions. Despite losing three core members—László Benkő, Tamás Mihály, and János Kóbor between 2020 and 2021—their final album Testamentum (2021) became a heartfelt goodbye.
