About Migos

Migos, an American hip hop group founded in Lawrenceville, Georgia, in 2008, comprised rapper Quavo, his nephew Takeoff, and their mutual friend Offset. Quavo, originally from Athens, Georgia, was joined by Takeoff and Offset, both from Lawrenceville, in forming the group. Managed by Coach K, who had previously worked with Gucci Mane and Jeezy, Migos became a significant force in trap music in the 2010s. The group’s distinct style and contributions helped shape contemporary hip hop, with Billboard noting their influence on pop culture and language.

Their breakthrough came in 2013 with the single “Versace,” featured on their third mixtape, Y.R.N. (Young Rich Niggas). The song’s popularity surged after Canadian rapper Drake remixed it, leading to its success on the Billboard Hot 100. This was followed by hit singles like “Fight Night” and “Look at My Dab.” Their 2016 single “Bad and Boujee,” featuring Lil Uzi Vert, topped the Billboard Hot 100, solidifying their status in the mainstream. The group’s subsequent singles, including “MotorSport” with Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, and “Stir Fry” and “Walk It Talk It,” further cemented their place in the top ten of the charts.

Migos released their debut studio album, Yung Rich Nation, in 2015 through Quality Control Music and 300 Entertainment. The album, which peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200, was well-received by critics. Their second album, Culture, released in 2017, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was supported by the success of “Bad and Boujee.” The group’s third album, Culture II (2018), also debuted at number one and achieved substantial commercial success, selling approximately 200,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. Their fourth album, Culture III (2021), peaked at number two on the Billboard 200.

Migos made a notable appearance in the television series Atlanta, playing fictionalized versions of themselves. However, their journey faced a tragic turn when Takeoff was fatally shot on November 1, 2022, outside a Houston bowling alley. This loss led to the disbandment of the group. On February 22, 2023, Quavo released a music video for “Greatness,” a tribute to Takeoff, which many interpreted as a sign of the group’s dissolution. Quavo and Offset briefly reunited for a tribute performance at the BET Awards in June 2023.

By October 5, 2023, Offset confirmed in an interview that Migos had officially disbanded. He clarified that the group’s end was not due to personal conflicts with Quavo but was a result of Takeoff’s death, which had ended any possibility of continuing as a group. The decision to disband was framed as a respectful acknowledgment of Takeoff’s role as the group’s “glue” and leader, marking the end of an era for one of the most influential hip hop groups of the 2010s.
