Lagbaja

Bisade Ologunde, better known by his stage name Lagbaja, is a renowned Nigerian musician, singer-songwriter, and percussionist celebrated for his unique contribution to the Afrobeat genre. Born in 1960 in Lagos, Nigeria, Lagbaja adopted his stage name, meaning “anonymous” or “faceless one” in Yoruba, to represent the idea of the common man’s identity being hidden or ignored, reflecting his socially conscious approach to music.

Lagbaja’s career took off in the early 1990s when he formed his first band in Lagos. He performed at popular venues like the Sea Garden and the French Institute, quickly gaining recognition for his ability to blend Afrobeat with other genres such as juju, funk, jazz, and Afro-Cuban rhythms. This fusion of sounds has become a hallmark of his style, deeply rooted in the rich musical traditions of Nigeria.

Throughout his career, Lagbaja has released several influential albums, including Ikira (1993), C’est Un African Thing (1996), and Africano… The Mother of Groove (2005). His 2000 album, We and Me, featuring vocalist Ego Ihenacho, tackled social issues and emphasized unity, making a strong statement about the power of music for social reform.

In the 2010s, Lagbaja continued to release music that resonated with the public, such as 200 Million Mumu (The Bitter Truth) (2012), reflecting his enduring commitment to social commentary. His distinctive masked persona and thought-provoking music have solidified his place as a key figure in Nigeria’s music scene, inspiring both listeners and aspiring artists.
