About Jeff Buckley
Jeff Buckley (November 17, 1966 – May 29, 1997) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist whose soulful voice and boundary-pushing music have left a lasting legacy. Born in Anaheim, California, he was the son of acclaimed jazz-folk artist Tim Buckley and Mary Guibert. After spending years as a session guitarist in Los Angeles, he moved to New York City in the early 1990s, where he became a prominent figure in the city’s avant-garde music scene. His captivating performances in East Village clubs earned him widespread attention.
In 1994, Buckley released his critically acclaimed debut album Grace under Columbia Records. The album blended original songs with covers, including a haunting rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” which would become one of his most iconic performances. Following the album’s success, Buckley toured extensively across the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Australia, solidifying his reputation as a powerful live performer.
Tragically, Buckley’s life was cut short when he drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 29, 1997, at the age of 30. At the time, he was working on his second album, which was later released posthumously as Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. Despite his brief career, Jeff Buckley’s music continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, influencing countless artists across genres. His work remains celebrated for its emotional depth, vulnerability, and timeless quality.
