About Irving Berlin

Irving Berlin, born Israel Isidore Beilin on May 11, 1888, in Tyumen, Russia, was a transformative figure in American music. His family emigrated to New York City when he was just five years old, and he began his musical journey as a street singer and singing waiter. Despite having little formal music training, Berlin wrote his first song, “Marie from Sunny Italy,” in 1907, marking the start of a remarkable career that spanned over six decades.

Berlin’s breakthrough came in 1911 with the release of “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” a song that sparked a national dance craze. Over the years, he became one of America’s most prolific songwriters, penning over 1,500 songs. His catalog includes beloved classics like “White Christmas,” “God Bless America,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.” Berlin’s Broadway contributions, such as Annie Get Your Gun and Watch Your Step, became cultural staples.

In addition to his songwriting prowess, Berlin was a savvy entrepreneur. He co-founded the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and established his own music publishing company. He also built the Music Box Theatre on Broadway, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

Berlin’s extensive career earned him numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, Grammy Award, and Tony Award. In 1977, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Irving Berlin passed away on September 22, 1989, at the age of 101, leaving an enduring impact on American music and culture.
