Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra y Magsalin, more simply known as Ibarra, is the central character in José Rizal’s powerful novel Noli Me Tángere. A young mestizo of both Filipino and Spanish heritage, Ibarra returns home to the Philippines after spending seven years studying in Europe. He comes back with big dreams and modern ideas, inspired by the Enlightenment and eager to spark positive change in his homeland.
But his return is met with tragedy—he learns that his father, Don Rafael Ibarra, once a well-respected and progressive figure, died in prison under suspicious circumstances. Branded a heretic and subversive by the local friars, Don Rafael’s death shakes Ibarra and sets him on a path of conflict with the corrupt colonial system and the powerful church authorities.
