About GRECAS

Las Grecas was a groundbreaking Spanish music duo that emerged in the early 1970s, formed by sisters Carmela Muñoz Barrull and Edelina “Tina” Muñoz Barrull. Born in Valladolid and Madrid, the sisters spent part of their childhood in Argentina, where they encountered a wide range of musical influences, from rock icons like Jimi Hendrix to jazz legends like George Benson. Upon returning to Spain, they began performing in flamenco venues in Madrid, eventually capturing the attention of producer José Luis de Carlos and composer Felipe Campuzano. Their unique sound, which blended flamenco with rock, led them to sign with CBS Records, and they adopted the name “Las Grecas,” inspired by their distinct rendition of the Greek song “Sagapó.”

In 1974, Las Grecas released their debut album Gipsy Rock, which quickly became a commercial success, selling over 500,000 copies and holding the number one spot on the charts for five weeks. The album’s breakout track, “Te Estoy Amando Locamente,” fused flamenco vocals with rock instrumentation, perfectly capturing their innovative musical style. They followed up with additional albums throughout the 1970s, including Mucho Más (1975), Tercer Album (1976), and Casta Viva (1977), each showcasing their versatility with influences from funk, soul, and disco.

Despite their initial success, the duo faced internal challenges and changes within the music industry, leading to their disbandment in 1979. Tina’s struggle with schizophrenia and substance abuse deeply affected both her personal life and her career, and she tragically passed away in 1995 at the age of 37. Carmela later attempted to revive Las Grecas in the 1990s and 2000s, collaborating with other artists, but these efforts didn’t achieve the same level of success.

In recent years, the legacy of Las Grecas has been revisited, with several events celebrating their lasting influence on Spanish music. In November 2024, Carmela Muñoz made a notable return to the stage at the Centro Cultural Pilar Miró in Vallecas, Madrid, where she performed three of their iconic songs. This event commemorated the 50th anniversary of Gipsy Rock, highlighting the duo’s pioneering fusion of flamenco and rock that continues to resonate with fans and musicians alike.
