About Four Year Strong

Four Year Strong, an American easycore band from Worcester, Massachusetts, was formed in 2001 by Dan O’Connor, Alan Day, Jake Massucco, and a fourth member who initially played bass guitar. All four attended Doherty Memorial High School, where they began to cultivate their sound. Their early work included a demo EP, All The Lonely Girls, followed by The Glory EP in 2003 and a three-track demo in 2004. During this period, Joe Weiss replaced the original bassist, and in 2005, Four Year Strong released their debut studio album, It’s Our Time. The album, which debuted digitally on Open Your Eyes Records, set the stage for their burgeoning career. They toured extensively with bands such as Maida and the Fully Down and Showoff, building a reputation for energetic performances.

The band’s first significant breakthrough came in 2007 with the release of Rise or Die Trying through I Surrender Records. This album marked a turning point, peaking at number 31 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Four Year Strong’s growing popularity led to their signing with Decaydance Records in early 2008. The band’s cover album, Explains It All, released in July 2009, was a tribute to their musical influences from the 1990s. The covers album featured guest appearances from notable artists like Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die and Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. This album was a nostalgic nod to the music that shaped their formative years, which the band described as songs that transported them back to their youth.

Their third studio album, Enemy of the World, released on March 9, 2010, through Universal Motown Records, further established their presence in the pop-punk scene. The album debuted at number 47 on the Billboard 200 and was supported by the single “It Must Really Suck to Be Four Year Strong Right Now.” Despite its success, the band faced a significant change in April 2011 with the departure of keyboardist Josh Lyford. His exit was partly due to the band’s decision to move away from synthesizers, which led to a restructuring of their sound. This period of transition saw the release of In Some Way, Shape, or Form in November 2011, marking a shift towards a more guitar-centric approach.

The band took a hiatus after their departure from Universal Motown in 2012, during which time O’Connor and Day focused on personal projects. Rumors of a breakup circulated, but the band clarified that they were merely taking a break. By 2014, Four Year Strong was back with new material. They signed with Pure Noise Records and released the Go Down in History EP in July 2014, followed by a self-titled album in June 2015. Produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge, the self-titled album was noted for its raw, unadulterated sound.

Four Year Strong celebrated the tenth anniversary of Rise or Die Trying with a world tour from January 2017 to February 2018, playing the album in its entirety at each stop. They also released Some of You Will Like This, Some of You Won’t, a compilation of re-recorded and reworked tracks. The band’s momentum continued with Brain Pain, their eighth studio album, released on February 28, 2020. They also participated in New Found Glory’s Sticks and Stones 20th anniversary tour in 2022 and released a re-recorded version of Enemy of the World in October 2022.

In 2023, Four Year Strong began working on their latest album, Analysis Paralysis, which was officially released on August 9, 2024. This album features singles such as “Dead End Friend,” “Daddy of Mine,” and “Uncooked,” continuing their legacy of high-energy, motivational pop-punk music. The band’s enduring appeal is rooted in their ability to blend nostalgic influences with their signature easycore sound, making them a mainstay in the genre.
