About Bedouine

Azniv Korkejian, known by her stage name Bedouine, is a Syrian-American musician whose unique blend of folk, indie rock, and Middle Eastern melodies has made her a standout figure in the contemporary music scene. Born in Aleppo, Syria, Bedouine’s early life was marked by a nomadic existence, shaped by her family’s moves between different countries and cultures. Her family relocated to Saudi Arabia when she was just a child, and it was there that she first developed a love for music, influenced by the diverse sounds of traditional Armenian, Arabic music, and the Western pop and rock she encountered on MTV. This multicultural background would become a defining feature of her music, giving it a distinctive and deeply personal resonance.

At the age of ten, Bedouine’s life took another significant turn when her family won the Green Card Lottery, allowing them to immigrate to the United States. They first settled in Massachusetts and later moved to Houston, Texas, where Bedouine attended high school. Her interest in music deepened during these years, leading her to study sound design in Savannah, Georgia. This technical education gave her a solid foundation in the mechanics of music production, an aspect that would later influence her meticulous approach to creating her own records.

Bedouine’s music career officially began with the release of her self-titled debut album in 2017. The album, produced by Gus Seyffert, quickly garnered critical acclaim for its introspective songwriting and soulful vocals. The record was a reflection of Bedouine’s rich cultural heritage and personal experiences, with songs like “Summer Cold” and “Louise” drawing directly from her memories of her grandmother’s home in Syria. The latter, written in Western Armenian, showcased her ability to blend her cultural roots with contemporary music in a way that felt both authentic and innovative.

In 2019, Bedouine followed up with her second album, Bird Songs of a Killjoy. This work further explored themes of loss, longing, and resilience, with frequent references to birds symbolizing freedom and the transient nature of life. The album solidified her reputation as a poignant and reflective songwriter, unafraid to delve into complex emotional landscapes. Her voice, often described as ethereal, coupled with her intricate guitar work, created a sound that was both timeless and uniquely her own.

By the time she released her third album, Waysides, in 2021, Bedouine had firmly established herself as a versatile and talented artist. The album, which revisited and reworked old demos from her archives, was a form of artistic spring cleaning, allowing her to let go of the past and move forward. It explored themes of identity, belonging, and the complexities of human relationships, all while maintaining the intimate and vulnerable tone that had become her trademark.

Bedouine’s ability to connect with listeners through her raw emotion and poetic lyrics has made her a beloved figure in the indie music scene. Her songs, whether melancholic or uplifting, resonate with a sense of authenticity that draws from her diverse life experiences. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Bedouine’s music promises to remain a powerful and captivating force, offering listeners a deeply personal glimpse into her world.
