About Unheard

Unheard” is the seventh extended play (EP) by Irish musician Hozier, released on March 22, 2024, through Rubyworks Records and Columbia Records. This EP consists of four previously unreleased tracks that were recorded for Hozier’s critically acclaimed third studio album “Unreal Unearth” (2023), but did not make the final track listing. In a statement, Hozier explained that these songs might have represented the themes of gluttony, limbo, violence, and the outward “ascent” from Dante’s Inferno, which served as the inspiration for “Unreal Unearth”. However, they were ultimately excluded from the album for various reasons.

The EP was produced by Hozier in collaboration with his longtime producer Markus Dravs, known for his work with artists such as Arcade Fire, Coldplay, and Florence + the Machine. Their partnership has been instrumental in shaping Hozier’s rich and soulful sound, and the production on “Unheard” continues the exploration of deep, thematic content set against a backdrop of Hozier’s signature blend of blues, folk, and rock.

The EP opens with “Circles of Gluttony,” a track that delves into the theme of excess and desire, combining powerful lyrics with a haunting melody, Hozier’s evocative vocal delivery, and intricate guitar work. “Limbo” follows, addressing the state of being caught between different realms with a melancholic piano arrangement and Hozier’s soulful voice, enhanced by subtle electronic elements that create an ethereal atmosphere.

“Violence,” as the title suggests, explores both physical and emotional aggression, featuring a gritty, blues-infused rock sound with powerful guitar riffs and dynamic vocal performance, captured by raw and intense production. The EP concludes with “Ascent,” focusing on the theme of rising above challenges and moving towards redemption, characterized by an uplifting, acoustic guitar-driven arrangement, lush string sections, and a powerful, anthemic production that evokes a sense of triumph.

Despite being composed of tracks that did not make it onto “Unreal Unearth,” “Unheard” has been praised for its depth and cohesiveness. Critics have highlighted Hozier’s ability to convey complex themes through poignant lyrics and emotive performances, with Markus Dravs’ nuanced production enhancing the overall impact. “Unheard” offers fans a deeper insight into the creative process behind “Unreal Unearth,” presenting four tracks that expand on the album’s thematic exploration of Dante’s Inferno.

Hozier’s thoughtful lyricism, combined with his soulful voice and Dravs’ production, makes this EP a valuable addition to his discography. Each song stands as a testament to his ability to blend literary inspiration with musical innovation, providing listeners with a rich, immersive experience.
