About BABYMONS7ER

BABYMONS7ER is the debut extended play (EP) by the South Korean girl group BabyMonster, released on April 1, 2024, by YG Entertainment. The EP marks a significant moment in the group’s career, following their official debut in November 2023 with the single “Batter Up.” Initially debuting as a six-member group, BabyMonster faced a challenge when member Ahyeon was unable to join the debut line-up due to personal health issues. Despite her absence, the group quickly garnered attention with their music and performances. In late 2023, YG Entertainment announced plans for a comeback in 2024, along with Ahyeon’s return, which would finally allow her to fully participate in the group’s activities.

In the lead-up to the release of BABYMONS7ER, the pre-release single “Stuck in the Middle” was unveiled on February 1, 2024, further fueling anticipation for the full EP. By January 24, 2024, YG Entertainment confirmed that Ahyeon had recovered and would rejoin the group for the promotions of their first EP. The previously released singles, including “Batter Up” and “Stuck in the Middle,” were re-recorded to feature Ahyeon’s vocals, adding a fresh dimension to the group’s sound. The group, known for their energetic and polished performances, embraced the return of their full line-up, with the inclusion of Ahyeon marking the beginning of a new chapter.

BABYMONS7ER comprises seven tracks, blending various genres such as dance, hip-hop, trap, EDM, pop, and R&B. The title track “Sheesh” was described by YG founder Yang Hyun-suk as a hip-hop song with a powerful chorus, featuring darker undertones compared to the group’s earlier works. This track showcases the group’s versatility, presenting a more intense, bold side that contrasts with the upbeat debut single “Batter Up.” One of the standout tracks, “Like That,” was written and gifted to BabyMonster by American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth. Puth’s involvement came after he discovered a viral cover of his song “Dangerously” performed by Ahyeon, which caught the attention of global fans. The song “Dream,” which had been previously featured on the group’s pre-debut reality show Last Evaluation, was also officially included in the EP, adding to the group’s narrative of perseverance and growth.

Critically, BABYMONS7ER received mixed reviews. While some fans appreciated the album’s energy and production quality, others felt it struggled to establish the group’s distinct identity. NME’s Carmen Chin, for instance, awarded the EP a rating of two out of five stars, noting that while there were glimpses of potential, the group’s sound felt too reminiscent of labelmates Blackpink, particularly in its recycled elements. Chin remarked that BabyMonster needs to further carve out their unique place in the K-pop landscape to stand out from their predecessors.

Commercially, the EP achieved impressive results. According to Hanteo Chart, BABYMONS7ER sold over 400,000 copies in its first week, setting a new record for the highest first-week sales of any debut album by a girl group. This commercial success underscores BabyMonster’s growing influence and appeal, as they continue to captivate a global audience. The EP’s release was supported by multiple physical formats, including photobooks and individual tag albums, allowing fans to collect various versions of the album. With their debut EP, BabyMonster established themselves as a rising force in the K-pop industry, blending dynamic music with captivating performances while hinting at their potential for future innovation.
